What does a local business website need to bring in customers?

A nice-looking website is not enough. Here are the 9 elements a local business website needs so that people message you or call you.

A local business website has a very clear goal: that the person who arrives messages you, calls you or comes to see you. It does not need fancy effects or long texts. However, it does need a few basic elements that many websites forget.

After building more than 100 websites since 2017, these are the nine elements I always include. I also explain why each one helps bring in customers.

Local business website viewed on a customer’s phone

1. Say what you do and where, straight away

In the first few seconds, visitors need to know what you offer and in which area. For example, “Emergency plumber in Reus and the surrounding area” works much better than “Welcome to our website”. That way, visitors know they are in the right place, and Google understands it too.

2. Contact buttons always in sight

A local business website should make it easy for customers to contact you. That is why it is worth having a WhatsApp button, a call button and your email, both at the top and at the end of every page. On mobile, a fixed bar with those buttons works very well.

3. A local business website built for mobile

Most of your customers will search for you on their phone, often in a hurry. Therefore, the website must look good on small screens and load in a few seconds. You can measure its speed for free with PageSpeed Insights, Google’s tool.

4. One page for each service

If you do several things, explain each one on its own page. For example, a hair salon can have one page for cuts, another for colour and another for treatments. This way, Google can show the exact page to someone looking for that service. Customers also find what they need sooner.

5. Your service area, clearly explained

If you work in several towns or neighbourhoods, mention them naturally. You do not need to repeat the town name in every sentence. It is enough to explain where you work, how to reach your premises or which areas you travel to. This detail is key for local SEO.

6. Real proof of trust on your local business website

Before getting in touch, people want to know whether they can trust you. That is why a local business website should show real customer reviews, photos of your premises and your work, and some finished projects. Stock photos, on the other hand, inspire little trust, because it is obvious they are not yours.

7. The same details as your Google listing

Your name, address and phone number must be identical on your website, your Google listing and in directories. If you write “5 High St” in one place and “5 High Street, ground floor” in another, Google has doubts. Also, link your website from your listing and add a map to your contact page. If you do not have a listing yet, read my guide on how to get on Google Maps.

8. Basic SEO done properly

Each page needs a clear title, a description that invites people to click and texts that answer your customers’ questions. It is not about stuffing the website with keywords, but about writing the way your customers speak. If your business does not appear in the results, you may want to read why a business is not showing on Google.

9. Easy to update and well maintained

Your website should let you change opening hours, a photo or a price without depending on anyone. That is why I work with WordPress and Elementor. Even so, someone has to update it, make backups and check that everything works. That is what website maintenance is for, and it prevents nasty surprises.

What a local business website does not need

On the other hand, some things take away more than they add:

  • Huge sliders that load slowly and nobody looks at.
  • Generic texts like “we are leaders in our sector”.
  • Long forms with ten required fields.
  • Pop-ups that cover the content as soon as you arrive.

Summary: a local business website that works

In short, a local business website does not have to be complicated, but clear, fast and easy to use on a phone. If it meets these nine points, you will have a tool that works for you every day.
